I have been through EVERY possible alternative therapy for degenerative disc disease-- massage, accupuncture, pills, physical therapy, RFAs (radio frequency abalations), epidurals, etc. Nothing was providing relief. I put off this surgery for 8 years because I have a VERY active job and I am very young (34). After my initial consultation with Dr. Raj, I knew that I would go through the surgery this time. He was very thorough with me and carefully reviewed my MRI disc for surgery planning. He personally helped with locking in the vascular surgeon as well. When I went to Kendall Regional to register for the surgery, the staff kept telling me how lucky I was to get him. They were right. The surgery was not fun, but I'm three months post surgery and feel better than I did in my teens or twenties, hands down! I'm able to be much more involved mom to my 9 year old and 9 month old! When I first saw Dr. Amar, he was great and explained why I needed surgery. Surgery is a big word to process and I decided to go for least invasive procedures (lumbar injections and physical therapy). The Lumbar fusion on my L4-5 disc (severely compressed for 20 years after a discectomy) was performed to perfection (only 1 dose of pain meds taken the night after the surgery, no more needed). 1 year later, I can sit for hours and attest that there is no burning, electric, sciatic nerve pain in my legs, as there always was -before the surgery. I can now sit, move-around, and do moderate-to-sports-level exercise without pain & without irritating the nerves along my lower back & into my legs.
