“I am suffering with cancer due to his negligence”
I began to see Dr Lewin on 2/22/2011. I had blood tests done before the visit and we were to have our first meeting for the yearly Medicare Physical. My prostate Specific Antigen level was 2.38 ng/ml. I had informed Dr Lewin that I was taking Finasteride and had been for 20 years. Dr Lewin did not inform me that we must multiply the PSA reading by 2.5 in order to find the accurate current PSA level, as Finasteride artificially reduces this reading. My actual adjusted PSA was 5.95 ng/ml. This is a level that should have caused an immediate referral to a Urologist for Prostate Cancer evaluation. Dr Lewin did not perform a Digital Rectal Exam, and just renewed my prescription for Finasteride and said that I was looking good. He left me in ignorance of my actual condition, possible Prostate Cancer. Each subsequent year, my adjusted PSA levels were similar - 4.5, 7.125, 6, and then Dr Lewin said that he would no longer allow me to get my PSA tested. He also did not perform a DRE at any time. Finally, after getting my DNA tested, as I was adopted, my DNA results showed a possible tendency to have aggressive Prostate Cancer. I demanded a PSA test and the reading came back as 10.5 ng/ml. I demanded a consultation with a Urologist, and two more PSA tests showed levels of 11.75 and 9.25. A DRE showed suspected Prostate Cancer and a biopsy confirmed it. I am now scheduled for a Radical Prostatectomy for a more Aggressive form of Prostate Cancer than would have been found if diagnosed through correct PSA level and DRE 6 years ago. My health, future, and possible early death, is a direct result of Dr Lewin not taking the necessary care and diligence in consulting, examining, and advising me correctly right from the first examination. I only learned of the necessity to correct the PSA levels when I saw my Urologist. I wish that I had never met this man!
