Over the course of life I developed neck pain, stiffness, and loss of motion. I believe that I injured my neck as a teenager but brushed it off as a mild sport injury that would heal in time. Years later it effects nearly every aspect of my life. Pain while sleeping, terrible headaches, neck/upper back/shoulder pain was all apart of my daily life. Living my life around my neck pain had become routine. My pain started to become worse, unbearable really. After an MRI it became clear I needed to see a spine specialist. My husband had a wonderful experience with OrthoAZ with his injury, so they were my first call. A call that changed my life! Not only does Dr. Behrend listen, he is compassionate and understanding. I was in a state of a miserable existence and he was able to take the time to teach me what was happening. I elected to do ACDF and it's like being reborn. I have no pain--NONE! I can do the things I only watched others do. He and his staff changed my life!

Dr, Behrend is knowledgeable, kind, compassionate and accurate. I had a serious extruding disc that was causing an immense amount of pain and numbness. Within the first visit Dr. Behrend had x-rays taken and developed a treatment plan that didn't delay getting me on the road to recovery. The only downside is that there isn't a clone of this wonderful man so that he can do surgery and clinical appointments at the same time. I went from being bedridden to back on my feet almost immediately after surgery. I have already recommended Dr. Behrend to friends and family who have needed an orthopedist and would not hesitate to recommend him or see him again if the need ever arose. My experience with Dr. Behrend and his staff was wonderful. Dr Behrend is very kind, compassionate, and listened to my needs. I had surgery on L4-L5 and L5-S1 and would be lying if I said I didn't have any ups and downs with my recovery process but overall the expectations of the experience were met. I'm no longer having the sciatic pain that caused me to resort to surgery in the first place. I'm very pleased with the way things went and I've begun doing things that pain has prevented me from doing in the past.

When it comes to back/ spinal surgery it is a very scaring thing to conccider. i was living with chronic pain for almost 10 years and have done everything i could to help relive my pain, surgery was my last option. Was reluctant to have spinal surgery but the orientation explained by Dr. Behrend helped me to be more comfortable with the intendedprocedure. The worst part of the surgery was the first two weeks of recovery. A lot of pain! Then the next four weeks were tolerable and got better every day. Now all the pain is gone and I am very pleased. My follow ups were all with NP Lorie and she was very knowledgable and helped me to understand all that I needed to know.

Dr Behrend is a blessing! I came to him on a referral from another Dr in the OrthoArizona group and it was my best referral in 6 years! Dr Behrend listened to my complains of pain with compassion and thoughtfulness. When I returned to follow up with him he already had a plan in mind on how to deal with my problem and discussed it with me giving me the knowledge I needed to make a decision to leave pain behind me.
The follow up care with Dr Behrend was gentle but careful to the point of getting me back to feeling myself again. The pain I experienced after the surgery and physical therapy were no where near what a relief it was to be done with the pain and restraints put on my life before surgery! I would recommend seeing Dr Behrend to anyone with the painful life I had before meeting him.

“Back at the Gym!”

I was referred to Dr Behrend from AZ Pain and had jumped through all the hoops of therapy and back shots. At 62 I was terrified of back surgery since when I was growing up it was a coin flip whether it worked or not. When I met Dr. Behrend I was immediately confident he knew what he was doing. He told me what they were going to do with L4/L5 and I asked "what about the microfractures?" He said "I am going to fix those too." He wasn't arrogant or pompous, he just believed in his abilities so I did too. Also three nurses at the hospita told me what a good choice I had made with him which made me feel warm and fuzzy as well. I am glad I had back surgery. The majority of the sciatica is gone and I am back at the gym lifting again "not stupid lifting, more reps." My wife and I liked Dr. Behrend so much that we are scheduling my wife for surgery because she has the same issues. Hope the office offers a two for one special.I give Dr. Behrend my highest recommendation.

I am an RN with 20 years of experience working in hospitals with doctors from a variety of specialties. I have met docs that were amazing and some that were not so amazing. Dr. Behrend is one of the amazing docs. I truly think he is one of the best docs I have encountered, For almost five years I had intractable shoulder/hand pain.from a traumatic injury. Or what I thought was shoulder/hand pain, Dr. Behrend identified my neck as being the source of the problem. He was right. After a cervical fusion most of my shoulder/hand issues were resolved.

When my pain consultant doctor, Dr Thompson refered me to Dr Behrend, i have been living with chronic back pain for a few years and did not just understand why.

But only a few days after the surgery, i could suddenly feel my foot and toes touching the floor when i stood up. I had realized that i had forgotten what's like to know the full feeling of my right foot.

I do not have a low back pain anymore, which is a kind of wierd concept to me.

“Recovery from decompression surgery”

I had tried everything from chiropractic, massage, trigger point injections to physical therapy. I was still unable to walk around the block. I had an MRI and was told to see a surgeon. I researched various back surgeons and chose Dr. Behrend. In our first meeting he recommended me to a pain clinic for injections to see if I could get relief. Unfortunately the pain doctor took my treatment way beyond steroid injections. I ended up having a spinal stimulator implanted in my back. This did not work. I then had a new procedure. The doctor placed a Vertiflex spacer in my spine. This also was unsuccesful.
I went back to Dr. Behrend and was scheduled for decompression surgery. The first 2 weeks, I still had pain that limited my activities. After 2 weeks the pain was gone and I am now back to enjoying life thanks to Dr. Behrend.

“MY HERO!!!”

I have not one negative thing to say! Dr. Behrend came into my life when I could hardly function with simple day to day tasks. I had been suffering for 25 years with severe low back pain. Through the years not one Dr. would get to the root of my problem. I will never forget my first visit. He looked me in the eye and told me that I was fixable. That he could do what needed to be done. As scared as I was, I totally trusted him with all my heart! The day of surgery I could tell right away that I was fixed! I even cried as I did laps around the hospital. The recovery took some time. I had a bad reaction to the glue that was used and Dr. Behrend took the time to scrape it off and help me with the itching pain. The amazing staff was always there with my millions of questions and phone calls. What a great practice Dr. Behrend has! I will forever be grateful each day to him. I had been experiencing neck and shoulder pain for about 7 years. I had shooting pains down my left arm with numbness in fingers on my left hand. I came to see Dr Behrend and he was happy to spend time with me to make sure he understood what I was experiencing and explaining my options. I decided to move forward with surgery to try and reduce the shooting pains down my arm that were unbearable.
I am so happy I did it. It has been 10 weeks now and the shooting pains are completely gone. There is still some neck pain and soreness. I will start physical therapy to try to eliminate some of that and increase my range of motion.
I am very happy with the outcome of the surgery and feel like I can start to do some of the things that I haven't been able to do for years.
