I had back pain for about 10 years that got exponentially worse each year. We held off on surgery for as long as possible but eventually moved forward with an L5-S1 fusion. I met Dr. Good when I was experiencing severe lower back pain that was negatively impacting my ability to walk and function in my daily life. He quickly identified that I had a bulging/disintegrating disc that was likely the culprit. At this moment in my life, my pain was clearly a 9 of 10 (10 being severe) and I was having to lay on the floor with lots of ice frequently throughout the day. I believed I was likely destined for surgery right away, but Dr. Good spent time evaluating and diagnosing my problem and deciding upon a treatment of drugs (short duration) and a steroid injection...and most importantly therapy as our first course of action. I had back problems over a decade, told at some point I would need surgery. But I remained relatively pain free for 9 years until an episode in March of 2018. New MRIs led Dr. Good to recommend a 2 stage surgery, over 2 days entering from the front for a fusion and the back for hardware and a laminectomy. I was shocked and terrified when he described the procedure but was in such pain I knew I had to consider it. I had had 2 spinal injections which did not solve the pain issue, consulted other surgeons about treatment. I felt most comfortable with Dr. Good, in spite of my initial shock. He was very thorough with his explanations and I had confidence in him. All the same I was terrified going into the surgeries. But after much prayer, I knew I had to take a chance. I was operated on July 3 and 5, 2018. The post-op pain was manageable with meds and in fact less painful than before surgery. After 3 months I was cleared for normal activity and one year later completely pain free.

“I'm free of continuous back pain after living with it for 30 years!”

Dr. Nguyen believes that surgery should be the last resort. I had severe continuous back pain in C3-C5. We started with cortisone shots, then radio-frequency ablation, and episiotomies; all worked for a year, then reduced in helpfulness. Finally, rather than fusion surgery, Dr. Nguyen proposed Stem Cell Injections, which was not covered by insurance. It was the best money I've ever spent! It took ~15 months for the stem cells to reach full growth and my pain slowly reduced. Now, I can golf again! I rarely feel any pain at all; only when I overexert myself, and it goes away by the next day. Thank you, Dr. Nguyen!
